Der Kuttelverkäufer kopiert eine Radierung von Giuseppe Maria Mitelli (1634-1718), die Teil einer 40-teiligen Serie von Darstellungen Bologneser Straßenhändler ist, welche 1660 unter dem Titel "Di Bologna. L’Arti per Via" nach Zeichnungen von Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) erschienen ist. Bei Mitelli handelte es sich um die Tafel 11 (vgl. Abb. 2).


Text unterhalb des Bildes: "Cade suenato il setoloso armento / sotto ferro crudel uittima essangue, / Et io nelt suo morir pescai contento / La mia fortuna entro d'un mar di sangue.", sign. u. li. "Fr Curti fe."
