Die Vorlage für das anonyme, 1554 datierte Blatt mit Luther und dem Kurfürsten von Sachsen unter dem Kruzifix ist ein Holzschnitt von Lucas Cranach d. Ä. (um 1472-1553) aus dem 1546 in Wittenberg von Hans Lufft gedruckten Neuen Testament ("Das newe Testament auffs new zugericht"). Der Kurfürst von Sachsen setzte sich früh für die Reformation ein und war der wichtigste Gönner Martin Luthers. Deshalb erhielt er den Beinamen "der Großmütige".
